AN 6.68 Saṅgaṇikārāma sutta - Delight in Company

“‘So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saṅgaṇikārāmo saṅgaṇikarato saṅgaṇikārāmataṁ anuyutto, gaṇārāmo gaṇarato gaṇārāmataṁ anuyutto, eko paviveke abhiramissatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

“|Bhikkhus,::::| that a bhikkhu who delights in company, takes pleasure in company, and devotes himself to delighting in company; who delights in crowds, takes pleasure in crowds, and devotes himself to delighting in crowds, will take delight in being alone in |seclusion::solitude [paviveka]|—this is impossible.

‘Eko paviveke anabhiramanto cittassa nimittaṁ gahessatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

That, without taking delight in being alone in seclusion, he will grasp the |theme of the mind::the mind’s observable signs or recognizable patterns; noticing what conditions the mind to settle or agitate (as a wise cook reads their master) [citta nimitta]|—this is impossible.

‘Cittassa nimittaṁ agaṇhanto sammādiṭṭhiṁ paripūressatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

That, without grasping the theme of the mind, he will fulfill |right view::view that is in line with the Dhamma - teachings of the Buddha that point to the nature of reality, the ultimate truth [sammādiṭṭhi]|—this is impossible.

‘Sammādiṭṭhiṁ aparipūretvā sammāsamādhiṁ paripūressatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

That, without fulfilling right view, he will fulfill |right collectedness::perfect stability of mind, correct mental composure [sammāsamādhi]|—this is impossible.

‘Sammāsamādhiṁ aparipūretvā saṁyojanāni pajahissatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

That, without fulfilling right collectedness, he will abandon the |fetter::chain, bond, thing which binds [saṁyojana]|s—this is impossible.

‘Saṁyojanāni appahāya nibbānaṁ sacchikarissatī’ti netaṁ ṭhānaṁ vijjati.

That, without abandoning the fetters, he will realize |Nibbāna::complete cooling, letting go of everything, deathless, freedom from calamity, the non-disintegrating; lit. blowing away [nibbāna]|—this is impossible.

‘So vata, bhikkhave, bhikkhu na saṅgaṇikārāmo na saṅgaṇikarato na saṅgaṇikārāmataṁ anuyutto, na gaṇārāmo na gaṇarato na gaṇārāmataṁ anuyutto, eko paviveke abhiramissatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.

|Bhikkhus,:::::| that a bhikkhu who does not delight in company, does not take pleasure in company, and does not devote himself to delighting in company; who does not delight in crowds, does not take pleasure in crowds, and does not devote himself to delighting in crowds, will take delight in being alone in seclusion—this is possible.

‘Eko paviveke abhiramanto cittassa nimittaṁ gahessatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.

That, taking delight in being alone in seclusion, he will grasp the theme of the mind—this is possible.

‘Cittassa nimittaṁ gaṇhanto sammādiṭṭhiṁ paripūressatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.

That, grasping the theme of the mind, he will fulfill right view—this is possible.

‘Sammādiṭṭhiṁ paripūretvā sammāsamādhiṁ paripūressatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.

That, fulfilling right view, he will fulfill right collectedness—this is possible.

‘Sammāsamādhiṁ paripūretvā saṁyojanāni pajahissatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjati.

That, fulfilling right collectedness, he will abandon the fetters—this is possible.

‘Saṁyojanāni pahāya nibbānaṁ sacchikarissatī’ti ṭhānametaṁ vijjatī”ti.

That, abandoning the fetters, he will realize Nibbāna—this is possible.”
