AN 1.248-257  Chaṭṭha Etadagga vagga - The Chapter on the Foremost (Sixth)

“Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, mama sāvakānaṁ upāsakānaṁ paṭhamaṁ saraṇaṁ gacchantānaṁ yadidaṁ tapussabhallikā vāṇijā.

“Bhikkhus, of my lay disciples who were the first to go for refuge, the foremost are the |merchants::traders [vāṇija]| Tapussa and Bhallika.

Dāyakānaṁ yadidaṁ sudatto gahapati anāthapiṇḍiko.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among donors is the householder Sudatta Anāthapiṇḍika.

Dhammakathikānaṁ yadidaṁ citto gahapati macchikāsaṇḍiko.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those who speak on the |Dhamma::teachings of the Buddha that point to the nature of reality, the ultimate truth [dhamma]| is the householder Citta of Macchikā's grove.

1.251

Catūhi saṅgahavatthūhi parisaṁ saṅgaṇhantānaṁ yadidaṁ hatthako āḷavako.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those who maintains a following through the four |means of social cohesion::lit. grounds holding together [saṅgahavatthu]| is Hatthaka of Ālavī.

Paṇītadāyakānaṁ yadidaṁ mahānāmo sakko.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those who give what is excellent is the Sakyan Mahānāma.

1.253

Manāpadāyakānaṁ yadidaṁ uggo gahapati vesāliko.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those who give what is agreeable is the householder Ugga of Vesāli.

Saṅghupaṭṭhākānaṁ yadidaṁ hatthigāmako uggato gahapati.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those attending on the |Saṅgha::The community of monks and nuns practicing in line with the Buddha’s teachings. In the broader sense, this is the community of disciples who have realized the noble path and fruition through the Buddha’s teachings [saṅgha]| is the householder Ugga of Hatthigāma.

1.255

Aveccappasannānaṁ yadidaṁ sūrambaṭṭho.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those with unwavering confidence is Sūra Ambaṭṭha.

1.256

Puggalappasannānaṁ yadidaṁ jīvako komārabhacco.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those who have faith in a person is Jīvaka Komārabhacca.

1.257

Vissāsakānaṁ yadidaṁ nakulapitā gahapatī”ti.

Bhikkhus, the foremost of my lay disciples among those who are trustworthy is the householder Nakulapitā.”
