The Buddha outlines five deeds that lead to a miserable rebirth.
“Pañcime, bhikkhave, āpāyikā nerayikā parikuppā atekicchā. Katame pañca?
“|Bhikkhus,::::| there are these five who are |destined for a miserable state::to be reborn in suffering [āpāyika]|, destined for |hell::a place of intense suffering, lit. no good fortune [niraya]|, doomed, and incurable. What five?
Mātā jīvitā voropitā hoti,
1.) A mother has been deprived of life,
pitā jīvitā voropito hoti,
2.) a father has been deprived of life,
arahaṁ jīvitā voropito hoti,
3.) an |Arahant::a worthy one, a fully awakened being, epithet of the Buddha [arahant]| has been deprived of life,
tathāgatassa duṭṭhena cittena lohitaṁ uppāditaṁ hoti,
4.) the blood of a |Tathāgata::one who has arrived at the truth, an epithet of a perfectly Awakened One [tathāgata]| has been spilled with a |corrupt::spoiled, seduced, festering, angry, evil [duṭṭha]| mind,
saṅgho bhinno hoti.
5.) or, a |schism::split [bhindi]| has been caused in the |Saṅgha::The community of monks and nuns practicing in line with the Buddha’s teachings. In the broader sense, this is the community of disciples who have realized the noble path and fruition through the Buddha’s teachings [saṅgha]|.
Ime kho, bhikkhave, pañca āpāyikā nerayikā parikuppā atekicchā”ti.
These|, bhikkhus,::::| are the five who are destined for a miserable state, destined for hell, doomed, and incurable.”
